The Brief
CAHD is the national voice of Canadian hospital-affiliated dentists — a professional association founded in 2015 to support hospital-based dentists and serve as a resource for the profession and the public on matters related to hospital dentistry. The site needed to do several things simultaneously: present a credible clinical identity, manage annual membership applications and renewals on a July-to-June fiscal year cycle, give members gated access to resources and position papers, and function fully in both English and French.
It also needed to support CAHD’s most significant initiative — a national strategy for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Dentistry, a commitment made at their inaugural meeting and a flagship advocacy project that deserved its own substantial presence on the site.
The Challenges
Full bilingual implementation
Every page, every navigation item, every membership flow, and every transactional email needed to exist in complete English and French parity. This meant implementing WPML across the entire site including the WooCommerce membership layer — a combination that requires careful architecture from the start, because bolting bilingual functionality onto an existing eCommerce structure creates problems that compound quickly. Getting the foundation right meant every subsequent update, new page, and membership cycle change has been straightforward rather than a source of ongoing breakage.
Membership on a fiscal year cycle
CAHD’s membership year runs July 1 to June 30 — not a calendar year, and not a rolling 12-month subscription. This required custom WooCommerce logic to handle both new applications and annual renewals on that specific cycle, with separate membership criteria governing who qualifies. Members needed a clean path from application through payment through access to the gated member portal, without the friction of navigating what felt like separate systems.
Tiered member access
The site serves two distinct authenticated states — logged-out visitors who need to understand what CAHD is and why they should join, and logged-in members who need access to resources, position papers, past meeting materials, and the member portal. Getting that transition right — so the site feels coherent rather than split — was one of the more nuanced UX decisions in the project.
Antimicrobial stewardship as a first-class section
At their founding, CAHD members committed to developing a national strategy for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Dentistry. That initiative needed more than a page — it needed a structured, multi-level resource hub covering what antimicrobial stewardship is, why it matters specifically for dentists, CAHD’s national strategy, and a curated resource library. That section now sits as one of the most substantive parts of the site and reflects the organization’s actual priorities rather than being treated as secondary content.
Visual identity and logo
The CAHD logo and visual identity were designed as part of this project. The mark combines the Rod of Asclepius — the universal symbol of medicine and healing — with a dental mirror in place of the traditional staff, immediately communicating hospital dentistry as a distinct specialty. Set against a two-tone blue circle, the mark draws on the associations of trust, professionalism, and reliability that blue carries in healthcare contexts. The identity established here carries through the site’s palette and typographic choices throughout.

Reflection
CAHD is a technically dense project that doesn’t announce itself visually — which is the point. The work started with the logo and visual identity and carried through to a bilingual WooCommerce membership site with custom fiscal-year cycle logic, tiered access control, and a substantive multi-page resource hub. That’s a lot of moving parts, and the measure of success is that none of them feel like moving parts to the people using the site. Members apply, pay, renew, and access what they need. The French version works. The antimicrobial stewardship section is findable and well-organized. The annual meeting gets posted and people show up.
